Wren's Pizza Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 can of tomato soup
  • 1 teaspoon of basil
  • 1 teaspoon of oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/3 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/3 cup of parmesan cheese
  • See my rambling at the end for other optional ingredients you can add!

Instructions

  1. Heat up the tomato soup as recommended on the label, usually over stovetop. In my case I put it in a saucepan along with a canful of water! Important Note: Do NOT heat the saucepan before putting the soup in. I did that, and freaked out a bit by the soup almost burning.
On the note of heat, probably best to keep the temperature around mid to low heat!
  2. Then just add the rest of the listed ingredients, making sure to stir in between! Also feel free to add extras of each if you like.
  3. Stir it for a while until you feel it's ready (personally recommend watching for the cheeses getting good and melted), then take it off the heat, serve into a bowl, and eat!!

My Ramblings About This Recipe

Long story short, I read a comic somewhere (that I've long since forgotten where it was, oops) about a guy who managed to make a pizza-flavored soup. He didn't specify too many ingredients, just basically "put the ingredients of a pizza in a bowl, minus the bread".

I figured "This seems pretty easy to recreate", and so I did! I hope anyone who tries this enjoys it too!

On the tomato soup, I would recommend getting a low sodium/heart healthy version. Mainly this is because too much salt could end up covering up the taste of the other ingredients. Most brands these days usually have some sort of healthy version.

As for other variations on the base ingredients, one time I ended up putting 1 tablespoon of basil instead of a teaspoon by accident. It was still pretty good!

But also by accident: adding a little over a cup of parmesan instead of the 1/3 cup, because I messed with the cap of the parmesan bottle while over the soup... By the time I got through to nearly finishing the soup, it was pretty much "Oops, all parmesan!!" So uh, be careful about that!

Now for optional ingredients you can add to this soup!

Croutons are great for this! Especially if you can get those fancy seasoned croutons, it goes very well with this soup! Feel free to let it soak in the soup for a bit, gives it a "chewy on the outside but still crunchy on the inside" texture.

Since this is kinda like a cheese pizza soup mostly, you can try chopping up some salami and/or pepperoni to add to it! If you try something like ground meat or other uncooked meat, be sure to cook it thoroughly before adding it to the soup. Otherwise it may not cook all the way if you just dump it in!

You can try other common pizza ingredients, like sardines and pinapples, but you may want to taste test and make sure it goes well.
